When you think about Alexander the Great, there's no doubt you think about the military mastermind who conquered much of the known world at the time. But the truth is that his mind was sharp in more than just one way. When he was young, his father, King Phillip II, decided that it would be a good idea for Alexander to get to know some philosophers, and his mother agreed. And so, he was taught by no other than Aristotle. And this was ironically BEFORE Aristotle made his name in the field of philosophy. While it's unknown what exactly what taught to him, it clearly made an impact on Alexander, and not just because of how he turned out, but because of how he interacted with another philosopher of sorts, Diogenes. He was a man who believed in the very basics of life, and was more than happy to do rather odd things in order to stay alive because it was only the basics that he needed to survive. Alexander was very much a man who did things his way and his tactics were a testament to his ability to read a battlefield, and its commanders, and determine what to do next. But, to say he was completely self-made would be foolhardy in the worst way. One of the biggest reasons that Alexander was a success was because of his powerful army. An army...that he didn't craft himself. Granted, he did have to get new soldiers after many conquests, but the basis of his army was established by his father, who was not only King as previously mentioned, but a military genius in his own right. He took the basics of the Greek and Macedonian armies and reforged them into something even stronger. The Greeks were known for their Phalanx formations, a tribute to the legendary Spartans, but King Philip knew that Cavalry, Siege Weapons, infantry, and more were needed to not only unify Greece (which he and Alexander did), but secure victory across many battlefields. While Alexander most definitely fulfilled his fathers dream in many ways, it was because of his father and his military reforms that allowed him to get such victories. Number 8: Alexander Did Not Inherit The Throne Easily. Alexander was but one of many contenders for the throne, and this led to many bloody battles that cost many lives. Including the lives of some of Phillip's other wives and children, including one daughter. Even when Alexander secured the throne for himself temporarily, he then had to fight off other rebellions to secure his position. Once those were dealt with, only then did he truly begin to rule. And the rest of that, as they say, is history. Number 7: Undefeated. You may have heard legends about how Alexander the Great was never defeated in a battle in regards to his conquests. And that is actually quite true. This is one of the reasons that he was called "Alexander The Great", because he was so great in terms of his military and tactical prowess that no one could honestly defeat him. For example, when he took on the Persians, under the reign of King Darrius III, Alexander found his troops outnumbered 2 to 1. But, because of how he outfitted his armies with a powerful Phalanx division that was 15,000 strong, and the Persians had no counter to their long spears, they were able to chop them down slowly but surely, and eventually, win them the battle. For 15 years, Alexander the Great marched across parts of Europe and Asia in order to gain more lands for himself and his people. It was only after he went into India that things started to turn sour. But not in terms of losses, but rather, his men started to rebel against him. And eventually, he died of Malaria at the young age of 32.

Scary Facts About The Meatpacking Industry! In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle, a not-so-fictional novel about the meat packing industry and its terrible secrets. While things have improved greatly since the horror show days of the old slaughterhouses, things can still be awful for the workers and the consumers. But how bad was it and how bad are conditions today? Here are ten things you didn't know about the meatpacking industry: This top 10 brought to you by Zero2Hero!! The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (or OSHA) was founded in 1971 and is in charge of inspecting company offices, warehouses and factories for safety and health issues. Unfortunately, their job can be tough when it comes to the meat packing industry. Laws could state that certain protocol must always be followed, but all the slaughterhouse has to do is make sure things look good when the inspector stops by once every few months. Once he's gone, it's business as usual. Records show that OSHA has not been fining companies nearly as much in recent years. Could it be that meat-packing plants have been vastly improving their health and safety? Could it be that they improve everything for inspection day? Or, could it be that they pay off OSHA to look the other way? It's hard to tell where the truth lies, but when news reports still come out about injured and harmed employees, it's a safe bet that the lack of fines does not come from higher quality working conditions. Number 9: Health Concerns. Meat packing has never been a safe profession. Sharp devices and crowded quarters are a recipe for disaster, and things have not improved much over the years. Couple this with little to no legal oversight in the past and regulators ignoring issues to this day and you have what is still one of the highest risk jobs in the country. Slaughterhouses of the past were known to have been covered with every liquid an animal has to offer. Before quality refrigeration, meat would spoil much quicker, creating a cloud of bacteria in the building for everyone to inhale. Like in the past, today's slaughterhouses put many employees at risk of injury due to fast acting machines and little physical room for error. Along with all of these conditions, employees tend to work long shifts with limited breaks, making human error a daily problem. A slip up here or there can easily lead to tainted meat hitting the market and poisoning the public. So, the next time you hear about a meat recall, it may not be due to something that happened at the farm. Number 8: Growth Hormones. Pump an animal full of hormones to make them grow bigger and you'll get extra meat to sell. The only issue is what exactly is being put into the animals? What kind of affects does it have on the human body when we eat the meat? Growth hormones have been used of years to get more milk from cows, grow larger chickens and to get more product in every way possible. Regrettably, for the consumer, the science is still out on the long-term effects of these hormones when people eat the meat or drink the milk. Still, it all goes into our food without a problem. The European Union has long banned grown hormones for animals being used for meat, but the USDA is perfectly fine with it. It seems other countries may be catching onto something that the US isn’t. Number 7: Antibiotics As A Solution. Antibiotics are good. They eat bacteria and keep us healthy. That's why we have them in so many products. However, they can become bad pretty quickly when we ingest way too much of them. Thanks to the meat packing industry, we are probably doing just that. Stats show that up to 70 percent of all antibiotics created in the US are put into animals at the slaughterhouse. That's a ton of antibiotics for one single industry! Companies could just maintain cleaner conditions for the animals before they are brought to the meat packing plant, and they could maintain cleaner spaces at the plant, but instead they pack in as much "meat soap" as possible. While it may help prevent disease from developing in the processed meat, it could definitely be too much. When too many antibodies are introduced, it can weaken the immune system due to lack of any bacteria coming in at all. So, when a new bacterium shows up, it could be much worse that it would have been. Number 6: Cloned Meat. Cloning animals is nothing new. In 1997, scientists cloned "Dolly" the sheep, opening a can of worms for concerns about animal cloning for meat.

Never ever doubt the power of a songs lyrics when it speaks from the heart and shoots into the heart of people everywhere. This is the reason that Hoobastank (which if we're being honest here is a really stupid name for a band) made a name for themselves with a song called..."The Reason". Long song short, it's about a guy who realizes that he needs to start over and be a better person, and it's all because of a girl that literally showed him the way, and gave him a reason to be better. It's a very powerful love story, and it made them a big name for a little while. Emphasis on little while. For while "The Reason" was a big hit, and is probably very recognizable even to this day, after that song kind of faded out and the new music came in...Hoobastank really didn't do much else in terms of impactful music. They still made music, and they're still making it now. But none of their songs or albums have come even close to what "The Reason" was like in terms of impact. Still, they're doing what they love, making music, and doing concerts for fans. And you can bet that "The Reason" is played in every show. Number 8: Lou Bega. Let's be honest here, the reason why we like to talk about one-hit wonders is because their one-hits are so memorable! They are really good tracks for one reason or another and it's weird that they never really had another hit. Such is the case with the one and only Lou Bega. His hit "Mambo No.5" was actually a remake of an instrumental from 1949, believe it or not. But, he put his own spin by using it to talk about the women in his life (or his pretend women to be more accurate) and it took off like nothing else. He was so popular that people were using the song in all kinds of ways. Heck, he even had a full Saturday appearance on Kids WB where he altered his song to talk about the characters on the shows, then made original songs based on Pokemon! That's awesome! But, sadly, all things come to an end, and while he is most definitely still known for "Mambo No.5", and you can still find him doing concerts, Lou Bega really hasn't done much since. Number 7: Fountains of Wayne. Let me guess, you don't know who this is, right? Well let say to words to you, Stacy's Mom. Yep, you know who they are now, right? This group kind of came out of nowhere to deliver a new song that no one saw coming. For it wasn't about a guy loving a girl, it was a guy falling for a girl's mom! Which definitely reminds me of the series American Pie, but I'll move on. Anyway, "Stacy's Mom" was a bit hit, and it was used all over the place, and had a weird music video to match. Sadly, unlike many of the artists on this list, Fountains of Wayne honestly didn't last long after their one-hit wonder. The band tried to keep making music together, but eventually broke up. One is still in music, but not even close to the fame that they once had. Number 6: Toni Basil. Let it be known that you're never too old to make music, such as with Toni Basil. Ironically, she didn't start out as a singer, she was actually an actress and choreographer, but eventually she came up with an ultra catchy song called Mickey. Okay, this one may be a bit obvious, but the best way to make an antidote for venom is to use venom itself. When someone is bit by a snake, their body reacts to the chemical that just entered the bloodstream, and they react badly. However, scientists have found ways to extract the venom from snakes, spiders and many other creepy crawlers to create anti venom that can quickly treat someone who has been bitten or stung. The process of collecting the venom is interesting, too. Scientists have to basically grab the snake and force it to bite into something, essentially “milking” it of its venom. The same goes for obtaining venom from a spider or a bee or any number of other insects. This may not be exactly what they signed up for with their chemistry major, but at least they’re helping the world! Number 9: Making pain helpers. Surprisingly, for how painful it can be to be bitten or stung, scientists have found ways to use venom, itself, to create pain helpers of all kinds. So…how does THIS work? Especially since a bite from a snake or spider is painful? As it turns out, it’s not about the bite as much as it is about controlling the amount of venom that enters the body. Particularly with spider venom, it causes pain that travels through the central nervous system to tell you that you have been bit. The problem is, a lot of venom tells your body to become paralyzed and shut down the body’s essential functions, which could lead to expiration. However, if a smaller amount of this venom is applied to a pained area of a patient, the nervous system can “lightly” paralyze the pained area, allowing for relief. This doesn’t mean that we’ll soon be prescribed a spider bite from our doctor, but it does mean we could be relieved of our pain through a controlled dose of spider venom. Number 8: Reduce Blood Pressure. All these images of bugs and snakes probably have your blood boiling, so now would be a good time to mention how venom can actually help you control your blood pressure. Since the 1970’s, doctors and scientists have been studying the proteins of viper venom. At that time, they discovered that it has a protein that disrupts the human body’s angiotensin-converting enzyme, or ACE. Disrupting the ACE is one of the most powerful ways they have found to reduce blood pressure in humans. ACE inhibitor treatments have now become a standard in the world of blood pressure reduction. See, even if these creepy crawlies are weird as heck and scary to look at, they can help reduce your blood pressure after all. Trust me! Number 7: Light Up The Brain It may not seem to useful, in fact it may seem downright pointless, but scientists have been able to use venom to light up brain cells. This may not seem like a good use of anyone’s time and money, but there is really a good use here. Researchers at the University of California, Davis have used tarantula venom to study its effects on the electrical charges that occur in and around cells. As it turns out, the venom from these fur creatures offers a chemical that can make cells light up when a potassium channel is opened or closed. Honestly, I don’t really know what that means, but, while there is no conclusive evidence yet, scientists believe that this venom’s control of lighting up cells can help fight electrical issues within the brain, such as epilepsy. If the venom is used in the right way and at the right dose, people with epilepsy and other similar disorders can find relief and maybe eventually a cure. That’s a pretty good use of deadly venom from a seemingly useless monster bug. Number 6: Treat Cancer. The world needs cancer treatments. A lot of them. Unfortunately, it’s such a unique illness that it is hard to pinpoint the exact way to best treat it. Fortunately…and I actually mean this…we have rattlesnake venom. Rattlesnake venom has a chemical named crotoxin. This chemical is known to attack and break cells. Now, normally, this is a bad thing, but when someone has cancer and a tumor that needs to be reduced, crotoxin is a perfect solution. Use the venom to target specifically the cancerous cells in the tumor, and you have a viable treatment for controlling the growth of a cancer.
